Respect

This one should be more of a discussion than a monologue, request you to participate freely with your input.

Just a few days back, over a usual office lunch, a discussion started off, rather, it took shape out of normal casual talk and went on becoming interesting enough to be discussed here. There bound to be multiple people in yours, mine everyone’s life, with who one feels at-ease, and multiple who one hate, and still few who one can’t stand with and wants to get rid off as quickly as possible. There might be various forces, factors persuading one to face them all.

Our discussion point started from the people around in office (as we talked about someone who irk me every time I have to interact with and I don’t have a choice of losing him) and then went on the family members and then to the people whom you can never meet (like those are in history) or are far away from one’s reach (like some big shot, where chances of meeting in person, are negligible).
What makes the difference? Admiration? Comfort level?? Fear……..?? or Respect??????

Basically, question came up in discussion was, why do I respect some one? What is the basis of respecting someone? Is it because I fear from him/her? Or is it something else? It is really respect or there is something more or something entirely different?  How does one see/define about one’s interpersonal relationship with others? What drives it?

‘THE’ question here is simple, yet complicated – What is RESPECT? How do You define it? How do You perceive it? How do You interpret it when it comes up either in thoughts or in discussion with someone?

There are multiple definitions (and hence contexts, in which it is used) available in dictionary for the word. However, bringing them in here is not the objective. More than the definition, I would like to see how you people think of it/ understand it/ expect it? Once you think over it, mysteriously it starts changing the shape and interpretation… at least it happened with me.

Just to initiate it once again, let me put my basic point, I see ‘fear’ as the base of ‘respect’. One ‘respects’ a tiger because one fears tiger. Having said that, one does not fear one’s family, yet one respect them… now what drives that?

No, I won’t dwell in to more details of what we discussed, rather, I urge you to take the discussion further ahead...  What do you say?
